Your sandals blow rust-tinted dust clouds over the palace floors when you arrive; already you hear Father's shouts from your bedroom, where you clothe yourself in clean blue linens and wait for the spirit to pass from Saul again.
But instead, you hear a voice like springs in the wilderness: ha'el lanu el l'mosha'it, he sings. In two months fighting Philistines, you have heard nothing so lovely.
Entering the throne room, you see ebony-lashed eyes fixed intently on a lyre. In that moment, despite yourself, you hate Saul, for you could kneel at this youth's feet and never thirst again.
