Growing boys need food, and Sirius is still growing, twenty-one and lanky. Hunched over in the dark cell, Sirius dreams of feasts: sweet Chocolate Frogs, savoury roasts, icy pumpkin juice. Every hour Dementors pass, and every eighth hour they bring bread and water, leaving gnawing frost in their wake.
One day, the Dementor brushes too close to Sirius's water; the ice tastes sweet and cold on Padfoot's tongue. Sirius remembers August afternoons and pineapple ice lollies, tart on his lips.
By next week, he clutches at the Dementors, dragging his paws on their cloaks until they freeze his drink solid.
