We climb the cliffs at Dover, the two of us: you in robes of night-ocean black, and I in tempest-grey. Today the sky curves above us, bare as an empty eggshell; wind cuts into our skin and slices your face with threads of black hair.

I walk to the cliff's edge and shield my eyes from the sun, and I look across the ocean, into forgetfulness. My mind knows that Calais lies over those deceptive waves, that Muggles in bright slippery bathing suits drive automobiles across the sand. My eyes see nothing, only a white line at the corners of my eyes that vanishes when I stare at it directly.

We stand side by side, and our fingers interlace wordlessly. I can taste sea-salt on my lips, but the wind steals your scent from my nostrils, replacing it with a mineral tang.

I turn to you and kiss you, a brush of dry lips; you withdraw slightly at the public display, but we both know that no one else comes within miles of these shores, so near to the world we abandoned. After one last look into your eyes, I face the ocean, let go of your hand, and fall forward into empty space and forgetting.

As I accelerate toward the ocean, I smile; I know that you will catch me.

finis.
