For once, Draco said nothing. Severus knew his incantation ought to have eased the pain to bearable levels (because Merlin knew how often he'd had to cast it on himself), which would normally have given the boy ample excuse to whine unattractively about Potter's self-centeredness, his bad taste in friends, his incompetence, and his stupid hair. This time, though, Draco remained mute, his eyes half-closed in something that looked rather like introspection.

When they arrived at the door of the Infirmary, Draco looked up at Severus, and Severus noticed Draco's blotchy cheeks and reddened eyes for the first time. "He could have killed me," Draco said, almost to himself.

Severus crouched until he looked eye-to-eye with the teenage boy. "Yes, he could have. We're Slytherins, and our lives mean nothing to them." Moonlight gleaming through the autumn mists, and a massive creature rushing at him so swiftly he'd had no time to fumble for his wand. "To them, bravery means destroying anything they fear. But we're stronger than that. To us, bravery means mastering our fears until we can make use of others'." Then Severus lowered his voice to his softest and most careful purr. "Master your fears, Draco. Fear nothing except failure at achieving your own ends. There is no shame in using others, when you are first master of yourself."

"Bollocks," Draco said softly, a trace of his old smirk playing across his lips. Before Severus could speak again, the boy placed his hand behind Severus's head and kissed him, inexpertly and needily, the kiss so young it very nearly distracted Severus from the cold, hard flicker in the back of Draco's eyes.

Severus pulled away. "I will help you, if you desire it. But don't insult me with more games." He placed his arm firmly around Draco's shoulders, and the two limped together for the last few steps into the infirmary.
